Our government has recently introduced E85 fuel (a blend containing up to 85% ethanol) and, as an environmentalist, I believe this is fundamentally a step in the right direction.
However, looking at current public opinion and technical realities, there are valid concerns regarding its immediate implementation. High-ethanol blends like E85 have a notable impact on fuel mileage and can cause severe damage to conventional vehicle engines that are not specifically designed to handle them.
If we look at the case of Brazil, they began their ethanol-blending journey way back in the 1970s. Currently, Brazil uses an E30 to E32 ethanol blend in its gasoline—one of the highest mandatory baselines in the world—and a B15 blend (15% biodiesel) for diesel. Over a span of more than 50 years, the Brazilian government gave its automotive industry ample time to research, adapt, and develop compatible engines. Today, they successfully utilize Flex-Fuel Vehicles (FFVs) that can seamlessly run on anything from standard blended gasoline to 100% hydrous ethanol (E100).
In contrast, India's timeline has been highly accelerated. India introduced E02 (2% ethanol in petrol) in 2003 as its first phase. While the initial goal was to achieve a nationwide rollout of E20 by 2030, the government reduced the time and achieved it early. Now, the rollout of E85 fuel has already begun at select public sector stations, with plans to expand to hundreds of outlets.
While Brazil took almost 55 years to safely mature its biofuel ecosystem, India has compressed this transition into just 23 years. Because of this extreme speed, the public feels immense pressure regarding vehicle compatibility and the longevity of their current engines. While the government has clarified that E85 is voluntary and meant strictly for new flex-fuel cars rather than forcing regular car owners to upgrade, the rapid pace of these fuel rollouts still creates significant confusion and anxiety at the pumps. An environmental shift of this magnitude shouldn't feel stressful to consumers; it needs to feel supportive.
Therefore, I personally think the government should form a dedicated committee. This panel should bring together everyday citizens, automobile engineers, fuel specialists, and leading environmentalists to collectively evaluate the rollout of E85, address public anxieties, and ensure our automotive infrastructure is genuinely ready for high-ethanol mobility.
